FAQ

API seal support plans are standardized configurations defined under API guidelines (API 682) for mechanical seal flushing and cooling. These plans ensure:

  • reliable seal performance
  • safe operation in hazardous services
  • reduced seal failure rate
  • consistent cooling/flush arrangements

Petronash supplies systems in line with plans such as Plan 21, 32, 52, 53A, 53B, 72 and more.

API Plan 21 is a seal flush plan where seal chamber fluid is circulated through a cooler and returned back. It is used to:

  • reduce seal chamber temperature
  • improve viscosity stability
  • extend seal life in hot services

Plan 21 is widely used in refinery services where pump fluid temperature needs to be reduced near the seal.

API Plan 32 uses an external flush fluid injected into the seal chamber. It is recommended when:

  • process fluid contains solids or contaminants
  • process fluid is not suitable for sealing
  • seal faces need clean lubricating fluid

Plan 32 is common in slurry, dirty fluid, or polymerizing services

API Plan 52 is a buffer fluid system used for unpressurized dual seals. It provides:

  • cooling and lubrication to the seal
  • containment of leakage
  • improved safety for hazardous process fluids

Plan 52 systems typically include a seal pot/reservoir with instrumentation.

Both are used for pressurized dual seals, but their pressurization method differs:

API Plan 53A

  • pressurized barrier fluid using a bladder accumulator or external pressurizing system
  • easier operation and common in many refinery applications

API Plan 53B

  • pressurized barrier fluid maintained using accumulator (bladder/piston type)
  • better stability for certain operating conditions
  • suitable for more demanding or fluctuating pressures

Petronash has strong expertise in supplying 53B systems with in-house accumulator manufacturing.

In API Plan 53B, the accumulator helps maintain stable barrier fluid pressure. It:

  • compensates pressure fluctuations
  • ensures consistent seal face lubrication
  • supports system integrity during pump transients
  • reduces chance of seal failure in critical services

Petronash manufactures the required accumulators in-house for full performance control

API Plan 72 is generally used for gas seal support systems. It supplies clean gas to the seal chamber for:

  • containment of hazardous fluids
  • sealing performance for volatile services
  • safer operation in refinery and petrochemical facilities

Plan 72 is used with dry gas seals and related seal arrangements

Yes. Petronash manufactures seal cooling/support systems with stainless steel piping construction as per:
