Y Strainer

Y-Strainer is used for mechanically removing unwanted solids from liquid, gas or steam lines by means of a perforated or wire mesh straining element. It is used in pipelines to protect Pumps, Meters, Control valves, Steam traps, Regulators and other process equipment.

FAQ

A Y Strainer works by forcing the process fluid through a mesh/perforated straining element placed inside a “Y” shaped body. Solid particles get trapped in the filter element while clean fluid continues downstream. The trapped debris can be removed during maintenance, making it a simple yet highly effective pipeline protection component.

Both are used for filtration, but they serve slightly different purposes:

  • Y Strainer: compact, economical, suitable for continuous operation, widely used for steam and gas lines, ideal for moderate dirt loads

  • Basket Strainer: larger filtration capacity, lower pressure drop, suitable for higher debris load and larger flow systems

For compact piping and general equipment protection, Y Strainer is the preferred choice.

Y Strainers are typically installed:

  • upstream of pumps (to prevent impeller damage)

  • before control valves (to avoid clogging and seat damage)
